Political parties are organizations that are national in nature and are formed by a group of Indonesian citizens voluntarily on the basis of the same will and aspirations to fight for and defend the political interests of members, society, nation and state, as well as maintaining the integrity of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia based on Pancasila and the laws and regulations. Republic of Indonesia constitution of 1945. (Article 1 paragraph (1) Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2011).

The general objectives of political parties are (Article 10 Paragraph (1,2,3) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 2 of 2011):
- Realizing the national ideals of the Indonesian nation as referred to in the preamble to the 1945 constitution of the Republic of Indonesia
- Maintain and maintain the integrity of the unitary republic of Indonesia.
- Developing a democratic life based on Pancasila by upholding the sovereignty of the people in the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia
- Creating welfare for all Indonesian people.
The specific objectives of political parties are
- Increase the political participation of members and the community in the context of carrying out political and governmental activities
- Fight for the ideals of political parties in the life of the community, nation and state.
- Building ethics and political culture in the life of society, nation and state.
Political parties function as a means (Article 11 paragraphs (1 and 2) of Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2011):
- Political education for members and the wider community so that they become Indonesian citizens who are aware of their rights and obligations in the life of society, nation and state.
- Creation of a climate that is conducive to the unity and integrity of the Indonesian nation for the welfare of society.
- Absorbers, collectors and channels of people’s political aspirations in formulating and establishing state policies.
- Political participation of Indonesian citizens
- Political recruitment in the process of filling political positions through democratic mechanisms by taking into account gender equality and justice.
Political parties have the right (Article 12 of Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2011):
- Receive equal, equal and fair treatment from the state.
- Organize and manage household organizations independently.
- Obtaining copyright on the name, symbol, and image of a political party in accordance with statutory regulations.
- Participate in general elections to elect members of the people’s representative council, the deity of regional people’s representatives, the president and vice president, as well as regional heads in accordance with statutory regulations.
- Form a faction at the level of the people’s consultative assembly, the people’s representative council, the provincial people’s representative council, the district / city regional people’s representative council in accordance with the laws and regulations.
