Industrial design is an applied art in which the aesthetics and usability of an item are enhanced. Something that produces creations about the shape, configuration, or composition of lines or colors or lines and colors or their combination, which is 3D or 2-dimensional, which gives an aesthetic impression, can be used to produce products, goods, industrial commodities or handicrafts.

According to Law No.31 of 2000 (Article 1 paragraph 1), Industrial Design is a creation of configuration, or composition of lines or colors, or lines and colors, or a combination thereof in three-dimensional form which gives an aesthetic impression and can be manifested in a pattern three-dimensional or two-dimensional which gives an aesthetic impression and can be realized in a three-dimensional or two-dimensional pattern and can be used to produce a product, goods, industrial commodity, or handicraft.

Industrial design rights are exclusive rights granted by the Republic of Indonesia to designers for their creations for a certain period of time to carry out their own work, or to give their consent to other parties to exercise these rights.

Those who receive protection include the following: His rights are given to new industrial designs. is considered new if the date of receipt is not the same as the previously existing disclosures. Previous disclosures as referred to in paragraph (2) are disclosures that before:

a. the date received, or
b. priority date if the application is submitted with priority rights.
c. has been announced or used in Indonesia or outside Indonesia.

Industrial designs that do not receive protection include: Industrial design rights cannot be granted if the industrial design contravenes the prevailing laws and regulations, public order, religion or morals.

Protection period:
1. Awarded for a period of 10 (ten) from the date of receipt.
2. The starting date of the period of protection shall be recorded in the public register and announced in the official news.

As for those who are entitled to obtain their rights are designers or those who receive these rights from the designer. In case the designer consists of several people together, the rights are given to them collectively, unless otherwise agreed.
